LEAF House-Latest News
Date: Wednesday, June 18, 2008
CURRENT STATUS: All the piers to support the decks were completed this last week and, hopefully, the decks will be installed by early next week. The instalation of utilities (electricity, water and sewer) will follow shortly thereafter. If all goes well, we feel fairly confident that we will be able to move in around the end of June or early July, and have the dedication before the end of July (assuming, of course, we don't have another month of record rains!)

LEAF House to be part of 2008 Solar Tour:
We have been asked to include LEAF House in the 2008 Solar Homes Tour, October 4th and 5th, 2008. LEAF House will be open on Saturday, October 4th, 11:00AM-5:00PM, as part of the tour. Details, maps and tickets will be available soon at their website.

Learn all about LEAF House:
Professor Amy Gardner AIA, LEED AP, who headed the LEAF House project for the 2007 University of Maryland Solar Team, will appear at Design DC to provide an overview of LEAFHouse; its design, design process, performance in the Solar Decathlon Competition, and modifications in order to be situated on a permanent foundation on the UMD campus. For details, see the Design DC Website.

LEAF House Dedication/Tours
We are sorry to report that due to recent record rains, the availability of the LEAF House for the dedication and our occupancy is currently delayed until further notice. Watch this site for news of when the dedication and ribbon-cutting will occur. For the very latest news about LEAF House as we near the dedication and move-in, visit this page and see the news box to the right!

HOT NEWS: A New Home for The AIA Potomac Valley Chapter?
The LEAF HOUSE - New home of the AIA*PV?
The Leaf House - New home of the AIA*PV?
With the assistance of John Maudlin-Jeronimo, FAIA (President of our Foundation, past chapter president, current senior regional director for the Middle Atlantic Region of AIA, and Assoc. Dean of the University of Maryland School of Architecture), the PVAF is currently negotiating with UMD/SOA to purchase THE LEAF HOUSE, their entry in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. We have also negotiated a long-term land lease of the land where our current office is located, on the UMD campus, to be the new home of the chapter and foundation. This will make ours the first "totally green" chapter house in the country.

Although the house cost approximately $549,000 to build, and has nearly $50,000 of solar equipment in it, it has been offered to us for a total purchase price of $220,000! The PVAF and AIAPV will be approaching AIAPV Firm Owners, Professional Affiliate members, and all other chapter members in the coming months for donations (to our 501(c)(3) foundation, fully tax-deductible) for the purchase, so this great idea can become a reality.

If we manage to pull it all off as planned, we WILL have a new home around June 3, 2008! For more information, and how YOU can help, VISIT HERE!
